Direct Sales Offer Recession-Proof Jobs

Not long ago, Craig Lapp made his living driving a truck that helped carve Southern California's soil into new developments. But then housing sales slumped, and in November 2007 Lapp's construction company let him go.

While he searched for another job, Lapp began working alongside his wife, Lynne, in a business based in their Temecula home, selling nutritional supplements made by the direct-sales company Isagenix. Nearly two years later and with no construction job in sight, Lapp says a one-time sideline has become the couple's bread and butter.

"It's paying our mortgage, our car payments … putting food on the table," says Lapp, 55, who adds that he and his wife are earning a six-figure income. "It was our 'Plan B' that turned into our 'Plan A.' "

Direct-sales businesses that rely on home-based representatives to peddle their wares are seeing their sales forces rapidly expand as the nation's unemployment rate soars to nearly 9% and those who lost jobs and nest eggs look for new ways to make money.

Africa
In Africa, XanGo completed the fourth year of its title sponsorship of a project in Ghana through a partnership with the University of Utah. India

Mexico

Canada

How the Recession Affects Network Marketing

Should you be spending time on network marketing when the economy is in a downturn?

Q: I've been working with a network marketing
company and am concerned about what others are saying about us being in a
recession. How will this affect my business? Should I be spending my efforts
on this part-time business right now in these
uncertain times? Should I focus on retail customers or on building my sales
organization?

A: Whether or not we are in a recession is a topic I'll leave to the
economic wizards. However, having worked full time in direct sales and
network marketing through several times of faltering economic indicators,
inflation, unemployment, layoffs, etc., I have some thoughts on this matter.

In today's news, you get mixed messages. But if we are in a recession, what
does it mean to you, the distributor? If you're not doing anything and
looking for an excuse not to do anything, a recession is about as good a
reason as any.

But if you're serious about your network marketing business, then, believe
it or not, a recession could be the best thing that's happened to you in a
while. Shaky economic times have historically produced a renewed awareness
of the need to make more money. You'll find people who were previously
uninterested in your business are suddenly looking for new financial
opportunities. They want a business that doesn't require a lot of capital,
allows them to establish their own hours and offers rewards that can grow
faster than capital or labor requirements.

Sound good to you? It's the business you're in right now!
While other businesses offer one or more of these benefits, only a true
network marketing plan can offer all three. The reality is that leveraging
your time through the multiplication process of network marketing is the
hardest principle to teach others, yet it's the easiest to attain if you're
involved with the right company and right product at the right time. It's
such a simple concept, people sometimes refuse to accept it as being
something that could actually work for them. They suffer from "analysis
paralysis," trying to figure out why it won't work rather than why it will,
making the whole process more difficult than it really is. But when people
are motivated by concern for their financial future, the sponsoring process
becomes much easier. Spouses are more supportive of their partner spending
extra hours working to create more financial security for the family.

If you're pre-planning for uncertain times, consider that customers
scrutinize your product or service more when dollars are tight. Is your
product or service a "need to have" or a "nice to have"? Products that are
necessities rather than luxuries do better during times of uncertainty.

Do you focus on retail or recruiting? In network marketing, these are never
exclusive. Building a strong retail customer base is critical, but you must
recruit others to duplicate your efforts. Learn the success formulas for
yourself, then teach others to achieve that same success. There is no other
way in network marketing. You can't achieve significant success on your
own--you only have so many hours each day. Nor can you sponsor that one
hotshot person who'll make you a success while you sit back and watch the
dollar bill sprout wings and fly into your mailbox. You need a plan to
duplicate your efforts through many others. It's a vivid example of the
biblical admonishment, "as ye sow, so shall ye reap."

Network marketing is and always has been a person-to-person business, so
nothing happens until two people talk. During recessions, talk to people
about protecting themselves against an uncertain future via network
marketing. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "It is one of the most beautiful
compensations of this life that no one can sincerely try to help another,
without helping themselves."

It's Your Business, But You Can't Do It Alone

Hi Everybody,

We had a fabulous Xango training on Saturday with Pat Petrini in Phoenix. For those who were there: we hope you could take a lot of new ideas home, especially on how to create systems to structure and grow your business.

Education is Key

We encourage you to go to as many trainings (incl. webinars, conference calls) as you can. Please understand that we are really lucky to have such an active upline! They give all the support we need from a modern Network Marketing business perspective. Remember, this is not Corporate World where you are not allowed to talk to people high up or where colleagues try to bully you out. We are there for each other.

For those who missed the Saturday meeting, please find a summary about the most important points Pat Petrini made below:

A. Our business is a team business.

Please take advantage of your sponsor and upline, get to know them and do as many three way calls as possible with new prospects. Do not go and try to do the business "your way" without any help. Too many do and struggle for a very long time dabbling frustrated around 1K and fail. You are the messenger, not the message! Open up the communication and let your upline start doing some work for you. After introducing your coach to your new prospect, sit back, listen and learn in order to get more confident about product, business and how to do three ways. This also takes the pressure off newbies to succeed immediately. The beauty of this business is that you needn't know much in the beginning.

B. Start calling and talking to people

Stop wasting your time with too much learning and analyzing products, downline, prospects. You have to make at least 20 phone calls a day to get your downline going / or find new people. And remember: Xango is not about selling a juice. It is about helping other people with their health and - if they are willing - their business. Find people's needs, listen, ask questions and help to solve their problem. Again, we are not in the Old Network Marketing World and not in Corporate World: we are here to help people not push them.

C. Drop Outs

Yes this does exist more than anyone wants to admit or speak about. But that's part of life. If you have people in your downline, who stopped drinking Xango, you should call them and find out why. Look at it as a customer service move. You are curious why or what happened. Ask them 5 questions to find out, if they really do not want Xango anymore or if they just did not have enough information from their sponsor about the product or the business and got lazy drinking Xango (75% give that as a reason!).

Do not pressure anybody: you only want to find out why they stopped drinking and you want to offer them help and answer questions, if they wish. It helps you to build relationships, trust, understand your downline and create momentum at the same time.

Here are the questions:

1. Why did you join Xango?
2. Why did you stop the ADP?
3. How long have you been drinking Xango?
4. How much did you drink?
5. Have you listened to CDs about the product/biz? Did you read any flyers or other print material? Did you go to an event?

Pat's experience is that only 25% of the people who stopped drinking Xango were properly introduced to Xango. The rest did not know how much they should drink, what the Mangosteen can do for them or how the business works.

D. Call everybody who is new in your downline.

Here is the phone script:
"Hi xx. My name is xx. I am a friend/colleague of xxx and I would like to welcome you in our team. People join Xango for many different reasons: some want Xango for free, some want to build a business and some need to prevent or help with a health issue. I wanted to connect with you today to find out how I can help you. What questions do you have and what can I do for you today? ...."

Please do not hesitate to call people even deep down your downline without permission from the personal sponsor. Everybody belongs to your team and will be happy to get support in any way!

E. Write an welcome e-mail to everybody new in your team!

A quick word on Glimpse

Please remember: Our goal is NOT to retail Glimpse (or Xango for that matter). Our goal is to have people sign up with the Xango company. Our upline has all sign-up forms at www.mangosteenarizona.com. Please check this resource daily, since there are new docs and forms coming in every day now.

We all recommend to start doing Glimpse home parties for now, but try to get people signed up with Xango and do not put too much emphasis on selling retail: Xango is not only about Glimpse, it is about the Mangosteen, which helps inside out with Xango and Glimpse and 3sixty5. Educate people by showing the Glimpse DVD and offer as many Q&A sessions as possible.

One last word from us: If you want to make it to 5K, 20 K or Premier in a reasonable amount of time - training is not an option, it is a must. Too many of us are dripping around in the 1K area for 1 or even 2 years and wonder why they are frustrated and not growing the way they should. Remember: be coachable and curious, but do NOT forget to put everything you have learned into action. Step out of your comfort zone and treat this as a business, not as a hobby.

From September 25 to October 3 in the city of Guadalajara, Operation Smile, a worldwide children's medical charity, will bring together more than 40 medical and non-medical volunteers to provide life-altering care for hundreds of children in Mexico. The mission will provide surgeries for those who suffer from cleft lips and/or cleft palates. Also participating on the medical mission is Satcha Pretto, co-host of the highly-rated Univision daily newsmagazine television show Primer Impacto-Fin de Semana (First Impact - Weekend Edition). Satcha, who will be on-site from September 25-30, will cover the mission for a news series to air on Primer Impacto-Fin de Semana in late October. In March 2008, Satcha was named as a Smile Ambassador for Operation Smile.

Led by Operation Smile Mexico, A.C., the mission will mobilize volunteers from Canada, Italy, Jordan, Mexico and the United States, who will provide complete physical examinations and reconstructive surgeries for those born with facial deformities. The mission will take place at Instituto de Cirugía Reconstructiva de Jalisco in Guadalajara.

Operation Smile Mexico, A.C., works with a local network of medical and non-medical volunteers to provide integral medical services that include evaluations, reconstructive surgeries, speechtherapy and nutritional plans, among others. These volunteers work together to restore smiles and change the lives of children, young adults and families who face the challenges associated with a cleft lip and/or cleft palate. 44 Do's & Don'ts for Your XanGo Business

1) Start with written goals and plans!

2) Don't wait for everything to be exactly right to start. IT NEVER WILL! Start now, with whatever you have. The things you need will come to you as you work towards your goal.

3) Realize that "rejection" is natural. For every 20 people you contact, expect 19 "no's" for every "yes." You may very well do better than that, but expect 19 rejections. This way, the rejections won't bother you because you expect them. Also, realize that they're not rejecting YOU - they're simply rejecting an idea. Just keep moving ahead. Be persistent, ignore the rejections, and you'll get more than enough "yes's" to build a highly successful business. Always remember: Some will. Some won't. So what? Someone's waiting. Next!

4) Treat your network marketing business as a serious, full-time business, and it will become one.

5) Follow-ups are just as important as the initial contact. If a person hasn't joined yet, following up with more exciting information can turn the tide. Many people report that they get their best people after following up 3-5 times.

6) Be patient. You'll work the hardest your first six months and get compensated the least. Big incomes never happen overnight in network marketing. They only come after you've properly shown your personally-sponsored people how to duplicate your efforts. Network Marketing is a numbers game.

7) Don't give your Distributors unrealistic expectations.

8) Be willing to invest more money into your business than you get out of it in the beginning.

9) Don't quit. The only way to fail is if you give up.

10) Contact your upline and get their help and suggestions on how to grow your business. They will expect you to listen and then TAKE ACTION based exactly upon the advice they give.

11) Ask for people's opinion on the opportunity. It's a good way to determine what objections they might have to joining and also allows you the chance to overcome those objections and sponsor them. You never recruit, you sponsor. Keep that in mind.

12) Formulate a plan of weekly activity and be persistent in following it (if you fail to plan, you plan to fail). Sticking to your plan is essential for success.

13) Assist those you sponsor as much as you can. Help them sponsor their first level distributors. Let them know that you offer your support. Teach your distributors the importance of doing the same. In helping others become successful, you help yourself become successful. It's also a wonderful way to make life-long friends.

14) Don't mail out a few brochures or contact a few people and expect the money to start rolling in. Expect to work your business consistently for 1-2 years before seeing a really substantial income.

15) Though network marketing is one of the few businesses where you can earn while you learn, think of your first six months primarily as a training period. Don't expect large earnings until after you've educated yourself through experience.

16) Don't waste time on sceptics or non-motivated people. They will NOT succeed in your business or any other. They do not possess the qualities of a winner (this includes "rocking-chair advisors" who talk and talk, seeming to know all the answers, but never act on any of them).

17) Always replace the people in your organization who do not succeed.

18) Don't constantly whine and complain to your upline or network marketing company. Realize that what you accomplish is mainly in your hands - no one else's. Also realize that, when you see a problem, 90% of the time there are factors you are unaware of. Don't jump to conclusions. When you have a problem, present it in a concise letter as positive, constructive criticism. Offer solutions if possible, too. Not only will this approach get you better results, but you'll be building your relationship with your upline/network marketing company instead of tearing it down.

19) Don't do things for your distributors that they should do themselves - create INDEPENDENT Distributors.

20) FOCUS! You cannot become successful in network marketing trying to do many things at once. We know of people out there that are involved in 30+ businesses. That approach is utterly and totally doomed to fail.

21) Always present yourself and your business in a professional and ethical manner.

22) Stick to the facts. Don't exaggerate the opportunity - it's actually amazing anyway!

23) Lead by example. Do all the things you want your distributors to emulate.

24) Learn as much as you can about the company / business you are working. But do it while you build not before you start!

25) Be duplicable. Avoid promoting your business in any way that causes your prospects to say to themselves, "Oh, now I see how this network marketing thing works, but I could never do that." In other words, if you are to succeed, your prospects must always be able to envision themselves doing what you're doing.

26) Think BIG! Small desire produces small results just as small fires produce little heat. Start with MASSIVE all out action from day one. Do what you are told to do by your upline and do even more of it than you thought you were capable of. Some people spend 10 years trying to 'be ready' and never build a business at all!

27) Know that most people crave recognition. RECOGNIZE your distributors who are doing good things with praise and rewards. Keep the contact with them close.

28) Communicate constantly! Keep in touch with everyone in your downline regularly. For your key people, make it daily if possible. The methods you can use are numerous: voice chat, webpage, newsletters, meetings, phone calls, email, voice mail, faxes, postcards, Skype etc - just stay in close contact!

29) Ask for referrals. Ask, E.g., "Do you know anyone who might be looking to earn some extra money?"

30) Always be ENTHUSIASTIC!!

31) When you come over new marketing / promotional methods that are PROVEN to work really well, share them with the people in your organization. Remember, DUPLICATION.

32) Build a list of contacts. Add to it daily.

33) Listen to tapes, CDs and audio files etc. on network marketing. Listen again and again until you've totally absorbed them.

34) Don't become obsessed with sponsoring a "heavy hitter." Instead, learn how to be a heavy hitter yourself.

35) Be organized, but don't allow the act of organizing to keep you from the real important things: Marketing, Sponsoring and Training

36) Don't let little challenges upset you. Concentrate on the many positives and the big picture.

37) Always remember that the only constant in life is change. There will always be changes to products, plans and initiatives to which you must adapt quickly. Like #36, don't let changes upset you. Know that you will have to deal with changes and other obstacles, both big and small, continually. Be prepared to be flexible.

37) Don't be a negative thinker and don't let the negative attitudes of others (even if they're family members, friends, or peers) influence you. All the great men and women in history had to overcome the ones that said it couldn't be done - and then went out and did it anyway. Think for yourself!

38) Don't be derailed by "perfection paralysis." Realize that you won't be able to do everything perfectly. Do the best job you can, then move on to the next person. Keep moving forward every single day.

39) Read books (such as Napoleon Hill's classic, "Think and Grow Rich") that will convince you how powerful your mind really is. Develop the tremendous potential in you (that we all have) that has never been tapped!

40) Have FUN! It's infectious! People can't resist someone having fun. Make your business so much fun that others will flock to you to join you.

41) Remember always - "IF IT'S TO BE, IT'S UP TO ME."

42) Just go out there right now and GET ON WITH IT! Don't analyse everything. Action pays but analysis costs.

43) Don't bug your upline for answers you can get for yourself from either their or the company's websites, brochures and information sources.

44) Say LESS to MORE PEOPLE, and do it MORE FREQUENTLY.

There is no problem in network marketing which cannot be solved by going out and sponsoring 10 new people'.

People, you have to stop thinking you can get rich in just a few months. Network marketing has the word "work" inside of it... like everything else in life and everything worth while, it takes commitment, dedication, passion, relationship building, patience and time. Too often do we see newly enrolled prospects get all hyped up in the first few weeks only to crash after 1-2 months of exhausting excitement and effort, followed by disappointments and failures. Fear of rejection and little knowledge of the nature of this business and product (especially with sales people or self claimed professionals that think they "know it all") add to a high pitch fast crash with little motivation and desire left to continue. The best part is, right afterwards they blame it on network marketing instead of looking to improve themselves.

One must learn to understand the psychology of people, oneself and then be able to handle it too. That is not everyone's cup of tea. Highly paid "professionals" (there won't be many left for long, just read the papers), that are used to a 5 digit monthly check have grown comfortable to being the center of attention and find themselves rejected by most of their "friends", colleagues and everyone else in their warm market, they thought they could "convince" (this is not sales) to join their new business over night.

The process is simple. Not easy. Not easy because most of us (97%) are not used to communicating this way. We are used to doing everything to be in the center of attention. We try hard to get our thoughts and needs across to others, but we do nothing or very little to show the patience to listen what others have on their minds.

In closing I will share with you today a simple process I have learned from one of my mentors, Tim Sales (www.TimSales.com). His teachings are phenomenal. Get his CDs today.
Greet your prospect or future potential business partner. Qualify them by listening to their needs and asking questions. Finally, invite them to look or listen to a "tool". Do not try to do the presenting yourself. Be the messenger, not the message. There are many different tools to do that for you. This is what we call leveraging. Leverage your time and money through tools. These can be websites, CDs, flyers and much more. Many of which are very cheap or even for free. Feel free to send me an email with any of your questions.

Education - Reading Really is Fundemental

Yes, if you like it or not, reading and education is fundamental to our success. This is just a friendly reminder to go through your CDs and booklets we recommended to you and to finally read that book that you know you should have read last year. Christine and I have probably inspired you here and then to order some more learning material every so often. It is crucial! Shifting our paradigms and honing our skills is not an option - we must!

We know life gets in the way all the time, every day. And that's exactly the problem - our comfort zone. We excuse ourselves all the time being too busy with a million other things. But are these million things changing our live's future to the better? In other words: "If we keep doing what we have been doing (not reading/learning, trying something else), we will keep getting what we already have." (our status quo of today).
Isn't that one of the reasons why we joined Xango? We are in this to change our life. So remember to put reading and learning high up onto your priority list. A little bit every day. Someone said at the last Xango Woman's Empowerment Event: "You have all lost your right to listen to music in the car until you have reached Premier!"

Christine and I meet once a week and do a "80/20 session". We identify all the things that create 80% of our income or success. That, what a surprise, is only 20% of what we do and who we work with. Many of us just keep busy to feel we're worthy, important, needed, loved by others or just busy doing something to define and edify our existence. Bad conscience goes a long way. But that is just poor time management and working for all the wrong people and wrong reasons. And guess what, that doesn't add to the bottom line. Not today, not next month.

Then we identify the 80% of things and people that blog us down and only make 20% of our success. Now comes the important and hard part: GET RID OF IT!

I will close this week, of course, with a book recommendation: "The 4 hour Work Week", by Timothy Ferris (www.fourhourworkweek.com). So the next time we see each other, you are either Premier or you're listening to a self improvement CD.

You would think, that after a few years in this business one would know it all, or at least most of it. Think again. Life is a never ending learning process. The sad part is that 90% of the western population (the ones that actually had the luxury to learn to read) does not read a single book after they leave school. Shocking, yes, but true. Come to think of it, I wasn't reading much either after school. Job and life took it's toll. But I was running dry after a decade or so and am thankful that Xango and the network marketing industry we are in, gave us new motivation to learn about a whole new world: people, coaching, health, wealth, the rewards of helping others, leverage and much, much more.
